Since their region was not contiguous with the main territory of Cochin kingdom, aspirants to higher education had to depend either the institutions of Palakkad or Coimbatore. As there were very few public transport facilities exist during that period, the prospect of using them caused unease to most of the people. Cosequently, many people went without a higher education altogether.

Sri. C.P. Karunakara Menon, the then Divan of Cochin State,  brought this situation to the notice His Majesty  Raja of that period, and the king showed  no hesitation in sanctioning a college, in the second half of the forties of last century, which is today the Government College, Chittur.

The Government College, Chittur was established on 11th August, 1947. Initially, it functioned out of the Victoria Girls' high School at Chittur. In 1954, it moved to the present forty five acre campus on the banks of the serene Sokanasini river.

The college started with intermediate courses in various disciplines and three under graduate courses- in Mathematics, Philosophy and Economics. It was affiliated to University of Madras in the beginning and currently to the university of Calicut. 

Today, the college has fourteen under graduate courses and seven post graduate courses and it can proudly claim to have played a pivotal role in reducing the educational backwardness of this region bordering Tamil Nadu. 

Features 

►The college offers seven UG programmes in Science subjects, six in Humanities and one in   Commerce.

►The college offers PG programmes in Commerce, Economics, Geography, Mathematics,  Music, Philosophy and Tamil

►The college offers research programmes leading to Ph.D in   Music, Philosophy and Tamil.

►It is one of the very few colleges in Kerala that offers both UG and PG programmes in  Geography, Mathematics,  Music, Philosophy and Tamil and the only one among the government/aided colleges under the University of Calicut 

►Research centre in Tamil is the only such centre under the University of Calicut.
